Disk Encryption is a common technique used by people to protect private data on laptops and computers. Disk Encryption scrambles all data on the hard drive making it unreadable to those who do not have have the correct key or password. Many operating systems, such as Windows Vista, Mac OS 10, and Linux currently employ their own disk encryption software in hopes to provide more secure features for users.

Unfortunately, a new kind of attack that requires physical access to a computer can be used to render these encryption programs entirely useless. This type of attack is referred to as a "cold-boot attack" and takes advantage of computers that are currently powered on or in sleep mode. An uncommon fact that many people are unaware of is that RAM data gradually fades when the power is cut spanning from a few seconds to a few minutes.

This exploit gives the attacker time to read the RAM data, extract encryption, passwords, and any other data that is currently being stored in the ram. The RAM can also be physically removed and placed into a different operating system or laptop to allow a program to decrypt the data. Attackers can also extend the time of data decay by cooling of the memory chips with over the counter products such as canned air commonly used for cleaning keyboards with dust.

This exploit leaves many popular disk encryption methods insecure, and leaving laptops most vulnerable to these types of attacks. Individuals and businesses that commonly use laptops need to pay closer attention to the physical security of their laptops to prevent this type of attack from happening.

New Wooden Laptop from Fujitsu

With notebook vendor Asus recentrly announcing a line of eco-friendly bamboo-covered laptops, laptop vendor Fujitsu has adopted similar plans and has released its first environmental friendly laptop called the "WoodShell". This portable notebook uses cedar wood and bio-based plastics to form the casing and several other parts. According to Fujitsu, this laptop "is not merely an environmentally friendly tool but an object of enduring style and utility."

Currently Fujitsu's laptop is only available in Japan and it is unclear if the company plans to launch it world wide, but it is definitely a step in the right direction for the environmentally conscious. With eco-friendly laptops now a viable option for consumers, we may see more big name laptop companies following suite and creating greener laptops.

New Dell Laptop Offers up to 19 Hours of Battery Life

In recent discussions with many of Dells customers, the Senior Vice President for business products group, Jeffrey Clarke, revealed that the number one priority customers looked for in a laptop was extended battery life. In order to meet these desires in a laptop Dell has completely redesigned the Latitude product line and has developed a new power cell technology that will allow the new Latitudes to run continuously for a minimum of 10 hours, and up to 19 hours while unplugged.

This new battery life technology will be implemented in all seven of Dells new laptops, but as expected the battery life will differentiate between models due to different screen size and other factors that will change from model to model. However, Dell promises at least 10 hours of battery life with up to 19 with their new technology and has created quite a buzz around their new line of laptops.

It has also been revealed that within the next coming weeks there will be an ultra-portable version of the laptop called the Latitude E4200.

Dell's First Mini Notebook, Inspiron 910

Recently leaked from Dell is their first plans of a mini notebook. The new mini notebook is in response to the growing demand for ultraportable notebooks. The new mini notebook Dell is planning on releasing is called the Dell Inspiron 910 or the Inspiron Mini. The new notebook release was delayed due to a unique keyboard design dell has planned that will remove the function keys from the mini notebook and in turn enlarge the more frequently used keys.

So far not much is known about the mini notebook except that it will have a 9 inch screen, 3 USB ports, VGA output and a memory card slot. Expect to see the computer out on Dell’s website august 22nd.

Lenovo has just released a brand new IdeaPad called the S10. The S10 combines all the great features on the S9 model, but now on a 10 inch screen. The S10 has a great look with a black lid with a white interior. The notebook though really sets a whole new bar for the mini notebook field. A long list of pros include the light weight of only 2.4 pounds, a very roomy and solid keyboard that does not warp or cause you to make mistakes due to the shrunken down size. The Lenovo IdeaPad S10 starts at a remarkably low price of only $429.99, it also sports 3 colors including black, white and red. The specs are not much to marvel over, but are still very good for a mini-notebook with a starting prices of $429.99.

Sadly it does not look like there is any upgrades offered on Lenovo’s website. Some other cons include only 2 usb ports and with a glossy look, fingerprint smudges will be prevalent. The Lenovo IdeaPad S10 is one of the best cheap ultra portable notebooks out on the market right now and I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a cheap portable laptop for on the go.

Solar Bag That Charges A Laptop

A cool new item out on the market is this Solar Powered Bag that can charge a laptop and other devices like cell phones. The Solar Powered Bag looks like a great idea. It looks like you just sit the bag in a place with direct sunlight and it will charge the battery inside the bag. Then it looks like whenever you are not using your laptop you just put the laptop inside the bag and plug it into the battery pack and it will start to charge. The solar paneled bag can hold up to a 17” laptop and it says “the solar panel generates enough power to fully charge a typical laptop from a day of direct sunlight”.

After doing some research it looks like you need to have the bag in direct sunlight for 8-10 hours before you will be able to plug in your laptop and receive a full charge. Sounds like an easy way to save money right, well wrong the bag costs $600. Pretty hefty price for a bag that requires you to have it sit out in the sun for 10 hours. I can see some people liking this like maybe people out in the middle of no where with no electricity and maybe some eco-friendly people.

Asus Releases New 15 inch Gaming Laptop

Asus has brought it upon themselves to offer one of the first budget gaming laptops out on the market right now and after looking at the specs you could argue that it is the best deal out there right now. The new gaming laptop is called the G50V and it is well equipped to handle any of the latest pc games. Heres a quick spec sheet to show what all the Asus G50V has to offer:

• CPU - 2.53GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T9400
• Video Card – 9700M GT 512MB DDR3 memory

As far as the graphics card is concerned it might not be a 9800 series card, but it is a lot better than the 8400m and 8600m series. Overall the laptop looks to be a nice mid-range gaming laptop.

HP DV5T Reviewed

HP has decided to step up there game in the laptop market by offering a new line of laptops this summer. Out of the new line of laptops though, the HP dv5t is the one for me. The dv5t combines the best of both worlds by offering a reasonable price and top quality performance. The dv5t starts out at the cheap price of only $749.99, but depending on what parts you want you can see the price start to hover around $1000 pretty quickly. Right now the barebones kit is just about as good as its going to get at this point in time.

Of course I would never recommend going with a factory spec computer, well because that would be just too easy, but really you should think about upgrading the spec list to your own needs. A good case for this computer would be if you want to play video games on your laptop. This laptop is the best video game laptop I have seen all year for the price. With just a couple of upgrades you can get your HP dv5t running high end games like crisis. To play video games on your HP dv5t I would recommend upgrading to the 9600m GT Video Card ($150), P8400 (2.26 GHz) processor ($50), and maybe even go with the upgraded 1680 x 1050 Display ($125). The upgrades might seem expensive, but if you look at the alternatives such as Alienware or XPS laptops you will see that you are saving a lot of money.

This laptop is by far the most versatile laptop I have seen. You can also convert the HP dv5t to be a great movie player. The dv5t supports a Blu-Ray player upgrade option for only $200 and make sure to upgrade the screen to 1680 x 1050 to really enjoy the quality of blu-ray. Also if you are thinking of upgrading your Hard Drive because of the size of the blu-ray movies I would recommend just buying 500GB external Hard Drive so that you save money, get more space, and keep your computer clean of bloat ware.

After looking into the HP dv5t I can say to you without a doubt that I would recommend this laptop to anyone who is looking for an affordable laptop, gaming laptop, and even a movie player laptop.

Today gaming on a laptop has become possible at a reasonable price due to increase in gaming itself and the fact that prices have significantly dropped on laptop parts as laptops become more popular and mainstream. Today most mainstream laptops come with enough RAM and a good enough CPU to handle just about any game you throw at it, but the real issue when it comes to gaming on a laptop comes with what Video Card is inside your laptop. A Video Card is really only important when it comes to gaming, it is what makes all your games look truly beautiful and run at a crisp clean pace with no hiccups. Today though there is such a large amount of Video Cards out there that it is really hard to figure out what to expect when you buy a laptop with a certain video card. Well in this post here I hope I can at the very least give you a broad idea of what to expect out of your gaming laptop when it comes to performance in terms of playable games and frame rates.

For starters when looking at a gaming laptop make you are going to have to expect a few things. First is increase in price and size. A gaming laptop will normally weigh upwards of 11+ pounds and costs usually at least $1000. If you do not feel like spending a thousand dollars on a laptop all I can say for you is buy a desktop instead because they are just so much cheaper than laptops, but you will obviously not see the same portability as a laptop. Ok another thing to make sure to look for when buying a gaming laptop is make sure the laptop has 2-4GB of RAM, 2.0Ghz and up processor and preferably a 17” screen so you do not feel cramped when playing. The last rule is the most important and must be obeyed if you are going to game on a laptop and that is make sure it has a dedicated graphics card. If the graphics card is not listed on the spec sheet then more than likely it is crap and not worth buying, also if you see integrated or Xpress it is not a dedicated graphics card. If your computer does not have a dedicated graphics card it means that your graphics card is built into the motherboard and it is junk and you will not be able to play any new games at all on your computer.

Ok now that we have that cleared up lets look at graphics cards. Before I start if you are looking at a computer and you know the name of the Graphic Card, but do not know much about it then I highly recommend that you look at this mobile graphics benchmark chart. The chart will tell you where your card places against every other mobile graphic card and will also put it into a broad category so you can get a good idea of what game quality to expect. Of course if you want the best laptop out there to play games on then you have to go with the alienware laptops. Alienware makes there laptops specifically for gaming and they are extremely good at what they were built for. The costs of an alienware laptop usually averages around $1500-$4000. Now most people do not have that type of money to spend on a laptop. Most people buy usually a dell, hp, gateway, or Apple laptop. Most of these brands use the same video cards over and over again so it is usually pretty easy to find some good specs on the video card in the laptop you are looking at. The two most widely used video cards that I have sound is the 8400M GS and the 8600M GT. The fact is the 8400M GS is junk I would not recommend buying the card for any games at all, but the 8600M GT is a different story. Expect to be able to play games like Company of Heroes, Fear, and Supreme Commander fluently on High Details with this card. Do not expect miracles out of this card though, you will not be able to play heavy graphics oriented games on max settings and will probably end up settling somewhere around medium settings. If you are looking for a better alternative to the 8600M GT then I would recommend any of the 8700 and 8800 series any of the 9700 series and 9800 series. The main thing you want to remember doing when looking for a gaming laptop is when you find a laptop you like make sure to find multiple opinions on the laptop and also multiple opinions on the video card. It looks like the rumors were true that Apple will be releasing a whole new line of laptops. We know they are true becasue that time is upon us. The first thing you might notice when looking at their new line of laptops is.. well they look almost exactly the same. Most of the changes are under the hood, but one thing that has changed is Apples new laptops are all formed from a single block of aluminum. The new aluminum body is lighter and stronger than the previous body and frame. Also a new GPU has been integrated into all the new laptops. The new GPU is the 9400M and Apple promises that the new GPU is 5 times faster than its last Intel integrated graphics chipset. Here is a full list of specs for each laptop.

Asus Releases Eee PC 1000h

Asus's latest compact discount notebook incorporates everything from previous models with many notable improvements. It is slightly larger than its predecessors, which makes it easier and more comfortable to use. This model features a 10-inch screen with a native resolution of 1024x600, a necessary improvement on the 901's 8.9-inch. Also, the keyboard is much larger, almost as big as generic notebooks, which is intended to be more comfortable than the previous models. It weighs in at only 3.6lbs, a bit heavier than the ultra-lightweight 900 but still light relative to standard notebooks.

The Eee PC 1000h features the smallest transistors in the world. The 45nm transistor technology is designed to reduce power usage and heat output without sacrificing performance. The new HP Mini 1000 was a huge improvement over their last mini notebook. It comes packed with a sleek black look with a swirl design that does not show up fingerprints. It also comes with a very spacious keyboard and the notebook is light enough that carrying it will never become a hassle. HP also was able to finally upgrade to the new Intel Atom processor and the notebook also supports an amazingly large Wi-Fi range. There is a few cons we have to point out though. The 3 cell battery was a disappointment, but HP has given word that they will be upgrading the battery to 6 cell around January next year. Also the boot time and transfer rates a fairly slow with the 60GB hard drive because the hard drive runs at a slow 4200RPMs. Overall the HP Mini 1000 was a good Mini Notebook and at a reasonable price of around $400-$500 you really feel that your getting your moneys worth.

Many of you have probably seen or heard of an external hard drive, but for those of you who have not used an external hard drive is just a storage device like the hard drive inside of your laptop except this one outside of your laptop in a standalone box. Dell Inspiron Mini 12 Notebook Review

Dell has come out with yet another Inspiron notebook to add to their very large line of laptops. This time around it is the Dell Inspiron Mini 12. It is very similar to Dell’s Inspiron Mini 9 except it comes with a 12 inch screen instead of a 9 inch and it also comes with a much needed performance upgrade.

As you can see the specs are not too great, but they are pretty good for a budget portable laptop. The laptop makes up for the specs by offering a very reasonable price tag of only $500 and it comes with a larger keyboard than most mini netbooks. The notebook is also very portable. Weighing in at only 2.72 pounds and being only .92 inches thick makes this netbook compete with rivals in both weight and thickness. This notebook is perfect for any business person on the go that wants a notebook that’s not too big to carry around easily, but not so small that it is difficult type on. I feel that with the Inspiron Mini 12, Dell has finally found a sweet spot between the Inspiron Mini 9 and their normal sized Inspiron Laptops.

In today’s laptop market a good mainstream laptop does not need to cost $1000 anymore. You can find a great laptop for a much more reasonable price of around $500. Now it might not be the best laptop out there, but I will guarantee you that if you choose your laptop wisely, you will not be disappointed in the performance of these budget laptops.

Picking a budget laptop is not the easiest thing. The problem there is a long list of manufacturers to choose from including: Dell, HP, Apple, Lenovo, Gateway, etc. and if this is not enough almost all these companies have a wide variety of notebooks to choose from.

So to help you out here is a couple guidelines that you should look for when buying a $500 laptop.

Size & Layout: A bargain laptop usually will be heavier than a more expensive notebook, try and get a laptop that weighs around 6 pounds or less. Also the size of a $500 laptop will usually be in the 14 to 15 inch range.

Resolution: The minimum resolution you should be shooting for is 1280x800 and the higher resolution the better.

Hard Drive: For $500 you can expect to get a 5400RPM hard drive with at least 100GB of space. If you can try to shoot for 160GB of space, this number really varies between users, but usually you will never need anymore than 160GB. If you do need more space then you are better off storing the information on an external hard drive. When it comes to hard drive speed look into getting a 7200RPM hard drive if possible the performance gain is a great benefit, but it will be more expensive.

RAM: RAM is very vital on a laptop. If you do not have enough RAM you will see your laptop start to run very slow as you have more and more processes start to pop up on your laptop over time. It is almost essential to have at least 2GB of RAM especially if you are running Vista. Also remember that RAM is very replaceable so if this is the only reason not to buy a certain laptop, you can always just upgrade the amount of RAM on your own.

Processor: A duel core processor is a must for today’s laptops. Almost any mainstream laptop offers duel core processor’s and makes sure its 2.0GHz or better. Avoid at all costs Intel Celeron & Atom Processors. Remember it is almost impossible to put in a new processor into your laptop so more the one you get you are pretty much stuck with.

Everything Else:

Look for an optical drive that can burn DVD’s.
Make sure to buy from a reputable brand and always read reviews on the laptop you are choosing.
Look for an HDMI cable slot. This will allow your laptop to play videos onto your nice big screen you have.
Of course make sure it has Wi-Fi capabilities and if you use are into Bluetooth you can usually find a laptop in this price range that is Bluetooth compatible.
Good Tips:

A refurbished laptop is an easy way to save money. Expect atleast 10% off the normal price and the have good warranties to protect you from getting a bad one. In my experience you hardly ever see people have problems with refurbished laptops

If you were rich and wanted to buy the most expensive laptop you could possibly find what would it be? Well I set out to answer this question and I feel that I have succeeded in making the laptop of my dreams. The laptop is of course an Alienware and its final cost is $7,127.00!

Now that is a lot of money, but what can you get inside of a $7000 laptop? Well for starters you had to pick which laptop to get from Alienware’s already expensive lineup. The choice was easy the Alienware Are-51 m17x would be easily the best pick because with a base cost of $2000 it was by far the most expensive choice.


Now we get into the real rich man’s playground, the upgrades! I am sure you have all went into a laptop upgrade config and selected all the most expensive upgrades and drool at the cost and the performance, well that is exactly what I did.

Video Card: Dual 512MB NVIDEA GeForce 9800M GT SLI
Cost: $850 – The 9800M GT SLI is the fastest video card out right now. These two video cards will guarantee you the highest quality in any game you play for a long time.

Processor: Intel Core 2 Extreme X9000 2.8GHz (6MB Cache 800MHz FSB) *Also the worlds most powerful mobile processor

17” 1900 x 1200 LCD w/ illuminated keyboard
This is ridiculous quality for a 17 inch screen. My 22 inch monitor only has a resolution of 1650 x 1050! Also the Alienware illuminated keyboard is very sexy and if you have never seen one before you are truly missing out. Upgrade Cost - $50

4GB DDR2 667MHz RAM: This seems a little low to me. I would think a high end laptop like this would have at least DDR3 RAM and 6GB, but it might they might have been limited by the fact that they had to fit so much inside of it already. Still 4GB of RAM is plenty for a laptop and you will definitely see a huge performance gain.

Hard Drive: 256GB (128GB x 2) Solid State Drives. Not sure you will see a performance gain in here when it comes to games, but you will sure see a price gain! Also worth mentioning is the fact that solid state drives are very quiet and produce very little heat.

Optical Drive: 2x Dual Layer Blu-ray Disc Burner. Wow could you imagine having a Blu-ray player for your 1200p laptop. This is a must and it sure would impress. Blu-ray movies look amazing especially when it is being played at the highest possible resolution.

The best part about this is you get your name engraved on the laptop, I mean how cool is that and all you had to do was spend a small fortune. I would really like to see this laptop built and would love to have it. I am very curious as to how well it would play Crisis. A couple facts worth mentioning is the fact that with all the performance upgrades makes this laptop not the most suitable for portability. It is 2.1 inches this and its just a solid black tone and comes in at a total of 11 pounds!

Netbooks Get A Much Needed Graphic Card Boost

Tired of your netbook sucking, well so was Nvidea and they have decided to try and do something about it by infusing its Gefore 9400M Video Card into its Intel Atom Processor and calling it the Nvidea Ion. So pretty much you get a small dedicated graphic card inside of your Intel Atom Netbook.

So what does this mean from a performance stance? Nvidea is promising 5x faster graphics and 10x faster video transcoding compared to a standard Atom powered netbook. It is also said that you will be able to play modern games like Call Of Duty 4 with a respectable framerate of around 25-30 fps. Nvidea has also reported that you will be able to play 1080p movies without any hassle at all and the Nvidea Ion will be able to handle Vista Premium and Windows 7. These are some high claims they are boasting for a graphic card that is small enough to fit in a netbook.

Well I guess no one will know till the Nvidea Ion first releases onto netbooks in summer 2009. Some more good news is supposedly you will not see much of a drop in battery life and the cost of this new chip will only raise the cost of your netbook by about $50.
